“The essence of yin is yielding. Yang is about changing the world; yin accepts the world as it is."

Bernie Clark

We all have masculine energy (yang) and feminine energy (yin) within us. Yang energy is associated with solar energy and ‘doing’, whereas yin energy is associated with lunar energy and ‘being’. We live in a world which requires us to be in our yang (masculine) energy a lot, stuck in cycles of doing, striving and achieving, which can lead to stress and anxiety.

In comparison to other types of yoga, Yin yoga is a more slower, introspective practice which invites us to turn inwards and deepen our awareness to our subtle bodies. In stillness, we are able to surrender control and lean into discomfort to access the peace, presence and balance that resides within.

Yin yoga offers an invitation to meet our bodies with acceptance and love.

The practice creates space for feelings and sensations to rise up to be felt and observed without judgement. This can lead to cathartic release, as we allow emotions to flow without suppressing them.

What are the benefits of Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga accesses deeper layers of the body like the connective tissue and fascia, with poses being held for longer periods of time. By letting gravity do its work, we can maintain flexibility in our joints as we let go, release tension, soften and relax. This also creates space for prana or chi (life-force energy) to flow through us and release energetic blockages which could be the root of physical illness. Yin yoga cultivates compassion, patience and inner stillness.

In stillness we feel
In surrender we flow

With balance we heal

What makes Yin Yoga different?

If you're like me and can't get enough of yoga and juicy stretches, but tend to find Vinyassa and Hatha too fast and intense - Yin Yoga could work well for you.

Yin Yoga focuses on the function of a pose - and how it targets an area in the body, rather than the aesthetic of a pose and how it looks. Here we can see how unique our bodies are; a pose might work for you but not for someone else and that’s ok. With Yin yoga, the aim is to find your edge - the point where comfort meets discomfort. Your judgement is needed to ensure you're not pushing your body beyond its limits. Once you've found your sweet spot, lean in, soften and let gravity take over. This is where the magic happens. â€‹

I wasn’t sure what to expect as I had never experienced anything like this before, but Harriet made me feel so at ease and safe. She was very clear with what we were doing and I completely embraced the experience. It was eye opening and I came out of it with a big realisation, which has helped me to better understand myself. I couldn’t recommended Harriet enough, she has a beautiful calm energy about her which really helped to make me feel more grounded.
